Doctors
Dr John Riley and Dr Philip Barnes are the two principals at Northern
Gastroenterology. Other gastroenterologists visit on a part time basis.
Dr John Riley and Dr Philip Barnes are both Gastroenterologists.
Gastroenterologists are physicians, with general training in internal medicine,
and sub-specialty training in the field of Gastroenterology. This involves the
whole of the gastrointestinal tract, from mouth to anus, and also includes the
liver and pancreas and other digestive organs. Gastroenterologists are
physicians, not surgeons. They do endoscopic procedures which is where the
diagnosis of hiatus hernia, peptic ulcer, all sorts of gastrointestinal cancer,
colitis, diverticulitis, haemorrhoids, etc can be made and arrange medical
treatment. If surgery is required, Gastroenterologists arrange referral to
Gastrointestinal surgeons who specialise in operative surgery.
